Cloud did not eliminate the data center, it redistributed it. Most organizations now operate across a mix of on-premise, colocation, hyperscale, and edge, and every one of those decisions carries a ten-year cost curve, a power and cooling profile, and a set of interconnection requirements that are getting more complex, not less. AI workloads are reshaping the economics again, with density, power, and location suddenly mattering more than they have in a generation. Getting this wrong is expensive to reverse. Getting it right requires expertise most organizations do not have in-house.
